Audio: SHIFT: All City Mixtape [@Rhettmatic @FreeTheRobots @PlannB]

FacebookTwitterGoogle+PinterestTumblrShare

In 2009, SHIFT was conceived inside a small, forward-thinking venue just outside of Los Angeles called The Crosby as a sonic collaboration between the World Famous Beat Junkies’ DJ Rhettmatic, experimental producer Free the Robots and Los Angeles dance party staple PLANN.B. In an experiment to bring their wide-ranging musical tastes together under one roof, a new sound was born that bridged Hip-Hop, experimental beats, electronic, soul, and house music. What resulted was a 6-year run that saw the residents cutting loose for capacity crowds alongside guests like Prince Paul, Dam Funk, J. Rocc, Maseo, DJ Numark, B-Real, DJ Day, Houseshoes & Soulection just to name a few. The three residents decided to drop this freebie mix as a thank you for all the support they’ve received over the years. This is what a night at Shift might sound like.

Audio: @LupeFiasco – Pharaoh Height Mixtape

FacebookTwitterGoogle+PinterestTumblrShare

Lupe Fiasco has shared a free mixtape of brand new material, Pharaoh Height. Built of six tracks that seem to offer up a message, based on their titles, the mixtape appears to to include no features. Pharaoh Height sounds as lyrically put together as anything he’s dropped in recent memory. If this is the new continuation of his Fahrenheit mixtape series, then fans of the series have plenty to be happy with. Check the release’s above, where you can both stream and download it. Thanks Lupe.

RIP Chocolate Thunder – Darryl Dawkins Dead at 58 [@NBA]

630968-21958246-1600-900

Darryl Dawkins (January 11, 1957 – August 27, 2015) was an NBA basketball player, most noted for his days with the Philadelphia 76ers and New Jersey Nets, although he also played briefly for the Detroit Pistons and Utah Jazz late in his career. His nickname, “Chocolate Thunder”, was bestowed upon him by Stevie Wonder. He was known for his powerful dunks, which notably led to the NBA adopting breakaway rims due to him shattering the backboard on two occasions in 1979. He made history in 1975 by becoming the first player ever drafted directly from high school into the NBA. Dawkins passed this morning and will be missed by the NBA family and beyond! A Pioneer lost too soon.

The Hundreds Present STEADY DIPPIN' (2007) by (Thee) Mike B on Mixcloud

The Hundreds and Thee Mike B have linked for a brand new offering. It’s pure vintage grooves, we’re talking 50s, 60s and 70s cuts from the likes of Santana, James & Bobby Purify, Blood Sweat & Tears and more. A little oldies, but it grooves in an extra-fresh way. We’ll let Mike B explain it for himself: “This is the 2nd DJ mix I did for the kings of street wear, The Hundreds (they also host it!) It’s a summery mix of low rider classics, as well as lots of other quality music from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. It was originally supposed to be a sequel to Drive-By Bangers, but we decided to go non hip-hop. 500 copies floated around the Magic tradeshow in vegas in ’07. It remains one of my most well received and sought after projects.”

Mobb Deep, Daft Punk, A Tribe Called Quest and five new songs of his own populate the hour-long set, which charts a strong course between Hip-Hop and the dark, deep-pulsing electro that he himself is known for. Audio: @DaMFunK – “Still Focused” [Unreleased] [@StonesThrow]

FacebookTwitterGoogle+PinterestTumblrShare

The West Coast king of all things synthetic, rich and funky has shared yet another new cut, this time digging into a bit of his surroundings’ g-funk heritage. Built of a giant synth bass and wild overdriven guitars, the moves confidently straight ahead even as it stutters, and is another classic “drive twice more around the block” number from the sly Stones Throw label signee. “Still Focused” was posted late Friday night and announced by Dam-Funk through a Tweet. “I feel like lettin’ y’all hear a new song I just completed, just for the Funk of it. Is that cool?” Funk has been extra-busy as of late, bringing Boiler Room into his inner vinyl sanctum and gearing up for his new LP Invite The Light.

Audio: @TheWeeknd – Beauty Behind The Madness LP “The Leak” (Official) [14 Track Snippets]

The Weeknd has shared 18 minutes of material off his upcoming The Beauty Behind the Madness LP, in an apparent attempt to quash the spread of illegal bootlegged copies that are allegedly circulating online. Every one of the record’s 14 tracks are included in the leak, which is effectively a string of snippets fading in and out of one another. Listen to the teaser, it should be more than enough convincing for you to pre-order your proper copy of the album, which is due out Friday.

Audio: @JarreauVandal x @KendrickLamar – “Be Alright” [@Soulection]

FacebookTwitterGoogle+PinterestTumblrShare

Kendrick Lamar‘s “Alright” is practically the turn-up anthem of this young century. It’s been adopted as an anthem of unrest, tailored to one of the year’s most undulated visuals and now it’s getting fit with to the vibe-heavy sounds of one of music’s most influential scenes. Soulection‘s Jarreau Vandal brings Kendrick’s smash out of Pharrell’s pocket and into a world of oceanic musical merriments. Vandal loops the triumphant chorus and fits it to a walloping bass-led groove, complete with Soulection’s patented high-hat trill, making this less trap than trap-laced, and a perfect fit for your weekend’ score. Catch the vibes from Jarreau Vandal’s wavy, yet potent flip of the Kendrick Lamar “Alright”.

Audio: @YG x @iamBlanco x @DBThaGeneral Feat. @Fiend4DaMoney & @AvLMKR – “G Thang” [Prod. @CookinSoul, @JakeUno & @GKoop]

FacebookTwitterGoogle+PinterestTumblrShare

YG has done nothing but impress with his recent string of singles. The 25-year-old hooked up with his neighbor, Terrace Martin, on the G-funk revival cut “Twist My Fingaz,” and now he’s connected with Spanish beat soothsayers Cookin Soul for a joint that’s, dare we say it, even smoother? On “G Thang,” YG keeps the airy Californian style coming and uses the signature funk guitar of Cookin Soul as a jumping off point from which to spit rapid-fire heat. Flanked by fellow Californian MCs DB Tha General and Blanco, the man professes his commitment to a certain set of vices that pair perfectly with the bright, endless sun in his part of the world. Cookin Soul called upon Jake One and Bay Area session musician G Koop to compose their “G Thang” beat.
