Biography

One of Hip-Hop’s most skilled DJs, Grandwizzard Theodore is universally acknowledged as the inventor of the scratch. He performed in the L Brothers with his older siblings Mean Gene and Cordie-O, and later formed GrandWizzard Theodore and the Fantastic 5. Theodore is credited with pioneering the needle drop onto the exact start of the passage to be played. Grandmaster Flash discovered that young Theodore, not even a teenager yet, had an affinity for the turntables, and when Flash spun records in Bronx parks, he would sometimes set up milk crates to let Theodore DJ. According to legend, when Theodore was a teenager he invented scratching largely by accident in 1977. While his mother was yelling at him to lower the music, he moved one of the records back and forth. He liked the sound and played it often, developing the technique until it was ready for public performance. GrandWizzard Theodore is a huge contributor to Hip-Hop culture and the entire turntablist movement.
