Audio: The @JRocc “Petestrumentals 2” Mix [@PeteRock]

FacebookTwitterGoogle+PinterestTumblrShare

Less then two weeks back, Pete Rock resurfaced with part deux to his critically-acclaimed 2001 beat tape Petestrumentals. Today, the Beat Junkies‘ J Rocc drops a brilliant remix tape featuring some of his tried and true handy work on focused flips of PR’s new project, slicing up what was already a potent piece and amplifying it from every corner. It’s a rare thing to see a record reworked and remixed in such close proximity to its official release, but these 20 minutes of frequency stand as a must hear tribute to Pete’s work past and present and doubles as a bit of a companion piece, sliding in a few nods to his classics along with all of the funk and soul chops you can bear. Listen to the mix above and let us know what you think of the rework.

“February is what we like to call “Dilla Month” in honor of the birthday & death anniversary of the one of the greatest (if not THEE greatest) music producer of all time….the one & only James Dewitt Yancey, better known to the world as the legendary J-Dilla. He was born in Detroit on February 7th, 1973 and passed away in Los Angeles on February 10th, 2006 due to complications to Lupus, a few days after his 33rd birthday & the release of his final opus, Donuts.”

DJ-Spinna-J-Rocc-East-West-Flavors-Mixtape-Cover

Last week we brought you DJ Spinna’s “West Coast Flavors” mixtape, a set comprised of some of the very best cuts to come off of Tupac, Snoop and Casual releases. Spinna’s confident J.Rocc gave East Coast Artists the same loving treatment and so it’s only fair to give him and his region its due. Lords of the Underground, Raekwon and more grace this tape, and when listened back-to-back with Spinna’s West Coast tape, it becomes clear that geographical rivalries are a lost cause, both sides of the continent keep it equally real and dope.

Audio: J Rocc x Erykah Badu – “Fire Dancer”

FacebookTwitterGoogle+PinterestTumblrShare

J Rocc comes through with a chop of Erykah Badu‘s “The Healer” on the slow-burning instrumental treatment “Fire Dancer.” The bones of The Analogue Girl’s Madlib crafted tribute to J Dilla are barely visible, except for the familiar and haunting chant that runs through the track. J Rocc inserts touches of grand piano, strings and Jay Dee’s vocal chops to accent Badula’s chant, which remains slightly off-key, building the displacing, sort of unsettling vibe of the track. “Fire Dancer” can be found on the Stones Throw cassette exclusive Beats On Tap(E). Get with the new heat from J Rocc and listen to “Fire Dancer” above.

The marriage of sounds from two musical icons leaves no doubt that the possibilities are endless when it comes to finding new and different ways to approach and appreciate their respective catalogs. This go-round, J Rocc throws MJ’s vocals for “Another Part Of Me” and “Beat It” over some familiar Dilla adlibs and instrumentals. Check the tracks below to get a taste of J Rocc’s killer combo. Cali crooner Aloe Blacc throws back to his 2006 debut Shine Through with “One Inna”, one of twelve tracks featured on The Beatbox, a digital compilation from Stones Throw. The horn dense instrumental produced by Madlib sports a slumping drum track that plays like a drunkard’s diddy-bop. The song gets its wings from Aloe Blacc’s falsetto coupled with the bell-toned flashes of brilliance peppering the production. The Beatbox is available exclusively to subscribers of Stones Throw’s digital discography on Drip.FM. Along with Aloe Blacc, the compilation features tracks from J Rocc, Georgia Anne Muldrow & Dudley Perkins, Peanut Butter Wolf, Yesterdays New Quintet and others.
